A cutaneous mixed tumor in a dog OAK
Watanabe, Ken-ichi; Chambers, James K.; Uchida, Kazuyuki; Nibe, Kazumi; Ushio, Nanako; Horiuchi, Noriyuki; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Nakayama, Hiroyuki.
The atypical cutaneous tumor of a 9-year-old mixed breed female dog was examined. The tumor was well-demarcated and histologically composed of a trichoblastic area, tricholemmal area and apocrine glandular area. Neoplastic cells in trichoblastic area and tricholemmal area had PAS-positive granules in the cytoplasm and were positive for pan-cytokeratin, cytokeratin 5/6, 14 and 19 and p63. Neoplastic cells in trichoblastic area were also positive for cytokeratin 15 and CD34. Neoplastic cells in apocrine glandular area were positive for pan-cytokeratin and cytokeratin 7,18 and 19. Myoepithelial cell proliferation with osteocartilaginous metaplasia was observed in this area. Since neoplastic cells showed multiphenotypic differentiation for hair follicles and...

Fibrinous pericarditis secondary to bacterial infection in a cat OAK
Tagawa, Michihito; Kurashima, Chihiro; Shimbo, Genya; Omura, Hiroshi; Koyama, Kenji; Horiuchi, Noriyuki; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Kawamoto, Keiko; Miyahara, Kazuro.
A three-year-old spayed domestic short-haired cat presented for evaluation of weight loss, cardiomegaly and pleural effusion. Echocardiographic examination demonstrated a thickened pericardium with mild pericardial effusion and a large volume of pleural effusion characterized by exudate. Although the cat was treated with antibiotics, the clinical symptoms did not improve. The cat developed dyspnea and died on day 7. Necropsy revealed a large amount of modified transudates ascites, pleural effusion and markedly dilated pericardium. Histopathological examination revealed severe exudation of fibrin and granulation tissue in a thick layer of the epicardium. The cat was diagnosed with fibrinous pericarditis secondary to bacterial infection.

Perforating abomasal ulcer caused by yolk sac tumor in a Holstein calf OAK
Sasaki, Hiromi; Goyama, Takashi; Noda, Yoichiro; Matsumoto, Kotaro; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Inokuma, Hisashi; 松本, 高太郎; 古林, 与志安; 猪熊, 壽.
A 2-month-old male Holstein calf showed clinical signs of abdominal bloating, melena, and pain and was suspected of having a perforating abomasal ulcer. Necropsy revealed a large mass located preferentially around the abomasum and a large perforating abomasal ulcer on the pyloric antrum. Milky white masses of various sizes were also found in the abdominal cavity that consisted of agglutinated nodules ranging in size from a pinhead to a golf ball and were distributed on the surfaces of the liver, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, and diaphragm. Microscopic examination revealed that the masses were composed primarily of hyaline matrices, epithelioid tumor cells, and large atypical cells with hyaline droplets and/or vacuoles. Stromal hyaline matrices and hyaline...

Pericardial mesothelioma with severe congestive heart failure in a Holstein cow OAK
Suzuki, Haruka; Watanabe, Ken-ichi; Horiuchi, Noriyuki; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Inokuma, Hisashi.
A 58-month-old Holstein cow showed anorexia, edema of the lower jaw and dewlap, jugular venous engorgement, abdominal gas, and watery diarrhea. Heart sounds were faint on auscultation, and decreased rumen motility was noted in physical examination. Echocardiography findings included adhesion of fibrin-like structures to the pericardium, highly echogenic periaortic region, and pericardial effusion, which suggested traumatic pericarditis or tumor formation. Although atypical mesothelial cells were observed in bloody pericardial fluid, no diagnosis was made. At complete necropsy, milky mass formation was observed on the epicardium. Histopathological examination led to a diagnosis of primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma. © 2017, Hokkaido University. All...

Possibility of Neospora caninum infection by venereal transmission in CB-17 scid mice OAK
Masuda, Tsuneyuki; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu; Maeda, Ryuichiro; Omata, Yoshitaka.
CB-17 scid and BALB/c male mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with Neospora caninum to examine the possibility of its venereal transmission. Some of these mice were killed on days 7 and 20 post-inoculation to examine the genital organs for presence of the parasite. The remaining scid male mice were housed with non-infected female mice from day 7 p.i. and kept with them for 14 days. These scid mice died between days 28 and 35 p.i. N. caninum DNA was detected in the testis of mice on days 7 and 20 p.i. by PCR and tachyzoite viability was determined by bioassay conducted by means of mouse inoculation. Microscopically, fewer tachyzoites were detected in the testis obtained on day 20 p.i., than in other organs. The inoculated BALB/c male mice survived until...

Retrospective study of clinical and laboratory findings of autosomal recessive cholesterol deficiency in Holstein calves in Japan OAK
Inokuma, Hisashi; Horiuchi, Noriyuki; Watanabe, Ken-ichi; Kobayashi, Yoshiyasu.
This retrospective study was conducted to clarify the clinical findings of an autosomal recessive cholesterol deficiency disorder in Holstein calves. Thirty-three calves with poor growth by uncertain causes from 2007 to 2016 comprised the study population of calves that were homozygous (n = 12) and non-homozygous (n = 21) for the disease. No significant group-dependent differences were found in the proportion with diarrhea or fever. Fewer calves with ataxia and anorexia were found in homozygotes. All affected calves showed muscular atrophy. Median RBC, Hb, and Ht values in affected calves were significantly lower. Median total cholesterol (TC) in homozygotes was extremely low, at 6.5 mg/dl (range, 5.0-15.0). TC readings under 10 mg/dl were thought to be...
